MK financing science Exchange: central market for major research institutions

Scientists, be prepared for certain violations.

Last month I wrote about a startup seeks Quartzy help scientists to streamline their laboratories, making it easy to keep track of who does what reagents (which is actually a bigger problem than you would think).

And today we see the launch of other funded Y Combinator startup called Exchange science that seeks to help researchers differently: he wants to make it easier for them to carry out experiments on expensive and sometimes rare equipment housed in universities across the country. And in the end, the company hopes to reinvent outsource research scientists, hoping to make it a more effective manner.

Before we get in the way they are going to do it, here's some information about how to research.

Co-founder Elizabeth Iorns, who has a doctorate in cancer biology and the Faculty of the University of Miami School of medicine, explains that the large universities often have what is known as the principal object is a special laboratory that houses the most valuable equipment that may exceed $ 1 million on the machine. Obviously, it would be unacceptable to put them in each laboratory scientists, and many of them are only sometimes anyway. So instead, scientists to submit their experiments to the core fund, where you have committed resources to scientists (scientists who solely perform these "external" experiments, and not to conduct their own research). Scientists resources then return the results of the researcher, who requested them.

Of course not every main centre is every piece of machinery. And Iorns said that when the researcher wants to use equipment that hosts other logistics can be painful. Central tracking database which universities have some equipment is missing, there is no standardization around payment systems, and even the price of each underlying Fund will charge a fee for the experiment can vary (this part, she explains, because rarely used objects have to charge more for the reimbursement of expenses).

Science-Exchange hopes that a solution to this. The company strives to create a central database, which allows researchers to find where they can pass the experiment, and how much it will cost them. It also handles the transaction, so researchers and universities do not have to worry about making sure their payment systems are integrated with each other (Science-Exchange makes its money by taking Commission on each transaction). The average price of about $ 5000 experiment — and despite the Commission's universities often save money because they can find the main objects with lower taxes.

And Iorns said that universities with underutilized major objects typically charge higher fees can close them without having to worry too much about their faculty, which, because they will be able to more easily outsource their experiments.

In the long term, Iorns said that run wants to simplify even wider range of experiments that do not necessarily involve the Basic objects. What if, for example, the researcher can devote one day a week for experiments by other researchers? They could offer experiments, specifically related to their professions can generate more accurate results than if these researchers conducted experiments on their own laboratories. Of course this can lead to issues around creating, who actually is reliable, but Iorns said that it could be considered using the system.

But it's still way. At the moment they are sticking with fixed assets. So far, they say, the results have been promising — and I think this sounds like a good idea.

Start command consists of Iorns, Ryan Abbott (previously cofounded Loudpixel) and Dan Knox (formerly VP at Moconta Launches Mobile Adesso through).

Science-Exchange is an online market for scientific experiments. Outsourcing has the potential to transform science into what he turned his science-Exchange makes outsourcing scientific experiments.
