On Sunday we broke the news that Skype acquires GroupMe group service messaging. We didn't know was the price, and neither company disclosed any of the terms of the deal that will remain a separate brand GroupMe now, and the team will be in New York.

Widespread reports said Skype paid-summer company as $ 85 million. We have heard this number is rather high and includes earnout or deferred payments. What is the real price?

Our sources close to the company say GroupMe downpayment for 43 million dollars, the United States and delayed payment (or earnout) can get GroupMe shareholders as much as $ 68 million over four years. The founders will receive several million dollars as part of their long-term agreements employmetn.

Why the difference? Have no idea. But I have a high degree of confidence, Skype will be paying somewhere between $ 43 million and $ 68 million GroupMe. That is one heck of a win for founders and investors who put $ 11.5 million in the company.

As an aside when we add the estimated purchase price of CrunchBase, we usually put in more, instead of the whole. I like to be optimistic, and we can always change it down later if new information becomes available.
