RIM announced prior to the PlayBook launch that it would be able to play nice with some Android applications, but in addition to the leaked beta, owners of the PlayBook yet nothing to show for it. RIM may not play out again with their upcoming line of QNX-powered BlackBerrys as Word from Waterloo is that they will be able to run Android applications right out of the gate.

Bloomberg's sources close to the project claimed that Android App player will be part of inventory software on QNX BlackBerrys when they start at the beginning of 2012. While adding potentially could add thousands of apps in the App world, RIM'S desolate, it may not be as easy as one might have hoped.

When RIM showed the concept App player, they noted the interested users just couldn't download Android applications on the market and launch them. More developers will have to unpack their code in order to make it a BlackBerry App world. RIM makes it sound like a trivial process (the developers can quickly and easily port their applications "), and they must, of course, hope this is the Turtle dev might not see the need to deal with the process if it turns out to be a headache.

While RIM's latest BlackBerry efforts were generally well received, its aging OPERATING SYSTEM can only do so much. QNX is perhaps the last chance to BlackBerry at holding onto mobile relevance and excellent Android app support could only help the cause. Launch App player PlayBook (allegedly scheduled for this autumn) will be the one to watch: it looks nice if RIM can only have a one-two punch, they must stay in the game. If not, well, I will Miss these keyboards dear.
