After spending too much time too little support from their owners for Conde Nast, Reddit on a little roll lately. They have already made a handful of hiring sprees this year moved to bigger, better Office and now they've made their first acquisition: RedditGifts.
For Redditors out there (Yes, Yes, narwhal Bacon at midnight and all that) RedditGifts is a gift for users of exchange services, for the first time asked Redditor kickme444 Reddit secret Santa in the record-breaking 2009 year.
In each event "Secret Santa" Redditors are automatically mapped to a Redditor and then tasked with seeking something awesome to send his way. Some underground through their consumer comments for keys so that they might like; others just make something neat and hope it works. Of course, there are horror stories of people scamming the free shit and other foolery — but mostly everyone is friendly and it works well.
After the success of the first round of the secret Santa (who pulled nearly 4500 participants), RedditGifts in the wake of the second in the 2010 year, this time with more than 17000 gift givers. Want to keep the fun going out from December, they also organized a completely secular and aptly named "Free day", which they describe as "day of nothing in particular". All exchanges a gift together, just shy of 43000 people attended, about $ 1.5 million (plus a ton of man-hours, as so many gifts, handcrafted) spent on gifts.
So why purchase? What is it Reddit? Short RedditGifts the two man team simply couldn't afford to keep saving a project is also working their day job ... so now RedditGifts is their day job. Reddit gets to keep awesome, well, largely to the initiative of the source community bonding and RedditGifts team gets to do what they have done before ... but for the money. Everyone wins!
RedditGifts will continue to operate within the same team of two people (Dan "kickme444" McComas and Jessica "dnej"Moreno 5) remain in the same domain, and would not participate in the day-to-day activities of Reddit proper. The only thing that is expected to change: RedditGifts eventually will go open source (Reddit is already), and all this should lead to better integration of (namely, easier registration) in the longrun.
No word yet if any money (in addition to salaries, allowances, etc.) actually traded hands for this purchase, or if this is more of the purchase, lease, in any case, it's not a bad deal for the project originally began the night on a whim.
Established in 2005 year, Reddit is a social news site that displays the news based on your personal preferences and the community likes. Your preferences are determined on the basis of your ...
