Beyonce helped push Twitter to a new record in terms of Tweets on the second last night when pop singer announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards. According to Twitter, big MTV # VMA Beyonce at the time gave Twitter entries bump: 8.868 Tweets per second.

Beyonce showed her pregnancy at the awards show last night, and the announcement was rubbing her baby bump at the scene after her performances of the singer. That's when Twitter saw a record number of Tweets sent.

MTV also saw record online viewership of the event, with 2.3 million video streams a day. MTV reported that on Sunday, MTV.com drew the largest VMA day audience ever (almost 2 million), while MTV's mobile site, scored his biggest day ever, including 2.7 million mobile views. MTV.com also top-notch referrals from Twitter and never on Sunday "was the most socially VMA day ever," according to the network.

It's a little surprising that Baby news from celebrity has an entry for Tweets per second. The previous record holder TPS occurred in the last minutes of United States women's soccer team game against Japan in July, with 7.196 Tweets per second.

Cuisine culture

500 Startups demo day: second batch of startups, Mcclure unleashed

We’re in Mountain View at Dave McClure’s 500 Startups HQ where the second-ever 500 Startups Demo Day is about to start. Today, 31 startups will present to press and investors here in McClure’s bright and sunny Mountain View office and you can watch them here, live.

McClure’s 500 Startups primarily invests in early stage startups that focus on the “Three Ds,” design, data and distribution. The incubator invests between $25K to $250K in its portfolio companies; startups that are part of the 500 Startups accelerator program get a $50K investment from the fund at a $1 million valuation and can stay in the 500 Startups offices for around four months. Companies that are part of McClure’s seed program receive up to $250K in seed funding.

McClure tells me that 500 Startups is primarily looking for startups that have an easily understandable story. “We definitely aim for monetization but there’s a few that are still working on that,” he says, “Runaway growth and no business model isn’t our thing, we’re far more interested in things that aren’t so sexy but make money.”

All in all, the 500 Startups brood is now comprised of 175 startups, including InDinero, FoodSpotting, Twilio, Wildfire, Send Grid, Zozi, My Gengko, e La Carte, Ginzametrics and 955 Dreams. Thus far, McClure has had four exits: Cardmunch to LinkedIn, BackType to Twitter, Punchd to Google and Backyard to Pixelfish.

McClure tells me that the startups pitching at this Demo Day are unified by a strong international and female founder thread and “attitude” (which is why I cover 500 Startups I guess). He also tells me that he’s looking for new startups starting next week, specifically searching for groups from South America or Brazil. The new brood will start in October.

In June this year, we noted that Instagram has a big milestone: 5 million users. While the total number of photos at the service was at 95 million, and given the pace of growth, they are expected to soon pass 100 million. Well, they missed, indicating that milestone, but today, not even two months later, they you mention another: 150 million photos.

It is 150 million photos are Instagram only 9 months since the app for comparison's sake, it took almost two years hit the Flickr 100 million photos on their service. Incredibly, Instagram now see photos 1.3 million downloaded every day is the number of 15 pictures per second.

The service is currently well past 7 million users, Instagram founder Kevin Systrom tells us. Again, that is over 2 million under the age of 2 months. Without any strategic actions they've grown to become the basis of the top 25 free app in the Apple App Store.

Each of these 150 million photos loaded with iPhone (and to a much lesser extent, iPod touches and iPads). It cannot yet be used Instagram from any other device, and you can't even download photos from your computer. While Android will support, the experience will remain predominantly one mobile, said Systrom.

One more crazy stat: Systrom said that 150 million photographs, 80 per cent have filters applied to them. (A) of the remaining 20 per cent, many who come from other camera iPhone apps with their own filters.
